Now that the genetic databases in City Medical records are three-nines
complete, many citizens have begun wearing consanguinity medallions.
The medallions are context-specific Net tags which indicate that the
owner has posted a hash of his gene-record. When you see someone
wearing such a medallion, a horus or visual-filter plugin can then
compare its hash to one's own gene-record, determine the degree of
shared heritage, and give an apparent color to the medallion -- pure
white for an identical twin, violet for a parent or child, blue for a
grandparent or grandchild, and so on. (The scale is logarithmic, so
that the distant and mixed relationships one gets from ethnicity and
geographic origin are visible and distinguishable.)
A more active display feature is to compute the consanguinity between everyone you see wearing a medallion -- everyone and everyone else pairwise, that is. The color coding appears as an elongated ellipsoid of light joining each pair of medallions in your view. The farther apart they are, the dimmer the light -- so it's not entirely overwhelming -- but it's also biased towards closer connections, since they're the most interesting. A crowd scene, nonetheless, is just a confusing blur. (The hashing function is necessarily imperfect, since one has to be able to measure a degree of congruence between two records, not just identity. But the designers of the medallions have posted a proof that they meet medium-confidence voluntary privacy standards, which seems a fair compromise.)

Water hydrants, or are they dehydrants? Not fire hydrants; quite the
reverse. Powerful packet-transport pumps which can pull water deep
into the subterrene. For emergency use only; flood, storm,
tsunami, diluenson... Don't even think about using one to empty your
pool.
But sometimes the children crack one, to dry off on a damp foggy day.

Maskweed is either a very understated hack-graffito, or a truly
astonishing symbiotic species: plant and field effect. This plant, spotted
(after some searching) in dozens of South Entry gardens and parks, is
associated with a colorant field which makes it appear identical to
surrounding plants, flowers, or weeds. It can thus only be detected with
sensor apps or energy detectors. (The biological plant is a somewhat
gene-hacked benevolent cheatgrass stock, similar to dozens of common
weeds. It could be from any number of cultivations or customized
landscapes.)
The "species" has not been observed to breed true -- that is, as a field-plant symbiosis. This certainly implies that it is a hand-created hack, distributed to various locations by graffitists or their tools. And it seems unlikely in the extreme that a plant-field symbiosis could evolve without human aid. Nonetheless, City Museum biologists are studying maskweed with fascination. However it came about, Field Safety has not disproven the possibility that the field app can spread on its own (either with the natural spread of the biological component, or opportunistically). Accordingly, maskweed has been rated a Class Two Unprecedented threat, and all known stands are under observation.

The Meighrow Integrals have swept the 37th Riverside Umbrella-Surfing
Finals. Jon Murek took the top spot, with teammates Mell and Sal Aufspau
coming second and third. Meighrow were using 4.84-area bowed-delta
brollies and grooved slimweight boards. (The controversial wing design
seems to have been fully vindicated, and we can expect a lot more bowed
and canted deltas next year.)
The final round was set on a five-meter crest, never before used in competition, which was recorded off the Transal Barrier three months ago in a spring monsoon. Murek performed with his trademark flair, despite starting in pole position. Based solely on his observation of the warmup run, with nobody surfing except the guidance buoy, he worked out a jump-and-jump routine ending with a triple flip at the end of the crest. He called it and he rode it: champion quality.
