Huff, Tanya -- The Truth of Valor (Confederation 5) [e-book purchase]
Ex-Gunnery-Sergeant ("there is no such thing as an
ex-Gunnery-Sergeant") Torin Kerr attempts to settle down to a quiet
life of civilian salvage operation. Then there are space pirates. This
goes bouncing along with verve, fistfights, and explosions. My only
reservations are, one, her relationship with hunky boyfriend is mostly
a plot device; the romance is an excuse for her to turn into a
pirate-stomping ex-Marine terror when Craig is kidnapped. Which is fun
to watch, don't get me wrong. It's just a lot of I will find him and
steely glares rather than, you know, an on-screen relationship. And
two, the author is awfully casual about the di'Taykans and their
sex-pollen pheromones, when used by bad guys. I wouldn't raise the
issue except that the last Huff I read (Enchantment Emporium) also
had this cutesy-ha-ha-sexual-abuse theme. Someone needs to raise an
eyebrow at her.
